Liger Mobility claims to make learning to ride an e-scooter safer thanks to its self-balancing technology
Liger Mobility, a Mumbai-based technology start-up is looking to disrupt the two-wheeler market with what it claims to be the first-of-its-kind made-in-India solution – self-balancing technology for the two-wheeler segment. The company has showcased its first product – Liger X – likely to be retailed at around Rs 90,000 (post FAME subsidies) once it is launched. The highlight of the e-scooter in addition to the usual features in an EV is the ability of the two-wheeler to balance itself with absolutely no intervention needed by the rider. This it says will bring in many more potential customers who have never ridden a two-wheeler before and thus cut down on their learning curve or fear for balancing the two-wheeler. Founded by Vikas Poddar, a graduate from IIT Madras and an MBA from ISB, and Ashutosh Upadhyay, a graduate of IIT Kharagpur aim to make two-wheelers safer — and in turn also save precious lives. It was this journalist who had broken the story about the start-ups self-balancing scooter in 2019. Over the last three years, the Founders have been working relentlessly to perfect their solution and ensure a full-fledged product. The strategy however has changed. In an interaction with Express Mobility, Poddar and Upadhyay share their thoughts. Edited Excerpts.How much investments have you raised so far and how big is your team?
Poddar: We have raised over a million dollars (Rs 9 crore) so far. The funds have come from established incubators, Angel investors, and Grants. We have been fairly innovative and extremely efficient with capital usage. Given the nature and complexity of the problem we were attacking, we realised that time was a more important resource for us than funds.What is your go-to-market strategy? Will you look at the D2C model or establish your own sales and service network?
Poddar: We will start with experience centres in select cities to establish and control the end-to-end process right from experience, order, delivery, and post-sales. Subsequently, we will scale up our distribution through dealerships that share our values.What is your manufacturing strategy? Will you invest in your own manufacturing set-up or look at contract manufacturing partners?
Upadhyay: Our focus is on design, IP, software, hardware, ai, assembly and quality. While we have designed and developed all our components in-house, we will not be manufacturing our entire BOM (bill of materials). The approach is to collaborate with experienced manufacturing partners to productionise and scale our designs. We will have our own assembly lines. Our custom components will be manufactured via existing setups of our component manufacturing partners.What will be the incremental cost vs the competition (without self-balancing tech)?
Poddar: Liger X will be priced at around Rs 90,000 (Including FAME subsidy). Given the variations in specs of the entire bill of materials for different vehicles in the market, it will be hard to make an apple-to-apple comparison.Is your product completely ready to be commercially sold, or what preparations will you need?
Upadhyay: The product is in the Homologation and Validation Stage. The pre-orders will start by mid-2023 and deliveries towards the end-2023. The milestone of homologation, tooling, and assembling line setup and production pilot will be completed before the pre-orders and delivery.A lot of many start-ups have taken the route of showcasing the product, and opening bookings but have been unable to meet the delivery commitments. How would you look at that situation?
Upadhyay: While we are aware of the approach, we do not subscribe to the idea. Over the years, we have received a lot of interest from users who wish to purchase our vehicle. The current unveil is for letting our potential users know that building a high-quality automotive product entails strict adherence to an industry-standard approach that has proven the test of time. We will continue to respect the process and will not be taking pre-orders unless we are very close to making deliveries.Will you be open to sharing your self-balancing tech with other players?
Poddar: There are no such plans as of now. We may consider strategic partnerships and collaborations to scale across geographies and segments in the long run.What are your future plans and will you need to raise additional funds?
Poddar: We are well capitalised for our current plans. And over the next 3 years, we will be raising $30-50 million (Rs 250 crore to 412 crore) to ramp up sales in the domestic and export markets. We will also be focussing on autonomous features, which will be relevant for two-wheeler shared mobility markets.

Mumbai-based electric vehicle startup Liger Mobility unveiled two electric scooters at the Auto Expo 2023, which claim to come with world's first self-balancing technology leveraging core sciences, IoT and AI. The Liger X and X+ electric scooters will be available for bookings in mid-2023, while deliveries are expected to commence later this year. Besides that, the company aims to start exporting these two-wheelers by mid-2025. HT Auto has learnt that the Liger X will be priced at around ₹ 90,000 (ex-showroom) after applying the FAME-2 subsidy. The EV firm claims that this industry-first technology will ensure enhanced rider safety, comfort and convenience, as compared to any scooter available globally. The auto-balancing or self-balancing technology can be activated or deactivated at lower speeds by just pushing a button. The Liger X and Liger X+ will come powered by a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, which is claimed to have been developed for Indian weather conditions. The battery has advanced algorithms ensuring thermal safety and predictive maintenance. The electric mobility start-up has not revealed the specifications of the scooters yet but it has claimed that both EVs have a top speed of 65 kmph. The Liger X promises a 60 km range on a full charge, while the Liger X+ offers a 100 km range on a single charge. The Liger X gets a detachable battery pack that can be charged fully in less than three hours, while Liger X+ comes with a non-detachable battery pack that takes around 4.5 hours to be fully charged. The manufacturer is offering fast charging options for both scooters at an additional cost. The two electric scooters also have features like reversing button, learner mode, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Speaking about the design, available in five different colour options, the Liger X and Liger X+ have an identical design that blends the retro theme with modern features. The scooters get inverted delta-shaped LED headlamps, LED daytime running light, LED taillight and LED turn indicators, a fully digital TFT instrument cluster, wide seats for rider and pillion rider, a chunky grab rail etc. Both the scooters come equipped with 4G and GPS, The Liger X+ is claimed to get a turn-by-turn navigation feature. Also, it will allow the rider to check phone calls and messages on the scooter's TFT display, claims the EV manufacturer. Both EVs run on alloy wheels wrapped with meaty tyres. Speaking to HT Auto, Ashutosh Upadhyay, co-founder of Liger Mobility, said that the startup is initially looking at a production capacity of 20,000 units in 2023. He also said that the production number would be gradually ramped up to a capacity of 100,000 units annually in the subsequent two years.

Mumbai-based technology start-up Liger Mobility today has unveiled the Liger X and Liger X+, which is claimed to be the world’s first self-balancing electric scooters at the Auto Expo 2023.
The start-ups patented technology christened ‘AutoBalancing’ enables the scooters to balance automatically, significantly enhancing rider safety, comfort and convenience as compared to any other scooter available globally. The Liger X has a range of 60km per charge, while Liger X+ will offer upto 100km range and a top speed of 65kmph. The unique self-balancing tech kicks in at low-speed mode (upto 5kmph) which allows the user to not keep their feet on the ground, in a typical start-stop or crawl traffic scenario.
The e-scooters are powered by liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery packs built for Indian conditions. The start-up says more than 2 lakh data points are collected each day from each battery, and advanced algorithms ensure thermal safety and predictive maintenance. The Liger X comes with an easily detachable battery pack that charges to an optimum under 3 hours, while Liger X+ has a built-in non-detachable battery that charges to an optimum under 4.5 hours. Fast charging options for both variants will be available at an additional cost.
Both the e-scooters are 4G and GPS enabled and will come with an app that enables the rider to see the live location of the vehicle, ride history, battery percentage and temperature. The user will also receive smart alerts like tow, accident and service reminders among others.
The Liger X+ also features turn-by-turn navigation and will also enable the user to view phone calls and messages on the scooter’s TFT display.

Liger X की रेंज 60km प्रति चार्ज है, जबकि Liger X+ की रेंज 100km है। इसकी टॉप स्पीड 65kmph है। बता दें कि इसकी अनूठी सेल्फ-बैलेंसिंग तकनीक लो-स्पीड मोड (5km प्रति घंटे तक) में काम करती है। Liger इलेक्ट्रिक स्कूटर में लिक्विड-कूल्ड लिथियम-आयन बैटरी पैक का उपयोग किया गया है। Liger X डिटैचेबल बैटरी पैक के साथ आता है, जो अधिकतम 3 घंटे के भीतर चार्ज होता है, जबकि Liger X+ में बिल्ट-इन नॉन-डिटैचेबल बैटरी है, जो चार्ज होने में अधिकतम 4.5 घंटे का समय लेता है। दोनों वेरिएंट के लिए फास्ट चार्जिंग विकल्प उपलब्ध होंगे, लेकिन इसके लिए अतिरिक्त खर्च करना होगा।
जीपीएस और 4G तकनीक
दोनों ई-स्कूटर 4G और जीपीएस इनेबल हैं। ये इलेक्ट्रिक स्कूटर एप के साथ आएंगे, जो राइडर को स्कूटर की लाइव लोकेशन, राइड हिस्ट्री, बैटरी प्रतिशत और टेम्परेचर की जानकारी देगी। यूजर्स को इसमें टो, दुर्घटना और सर्विस रिमाइंडर जैसे स्मार्ट अलर्ट भी प्राप्त होंगे। Liger X+ में टर्न बाय टर्न नेविगेशन भी है। इसके अलावा, यूजर स्कूटर के TFT डिस्प्ले पर फोन कॉल और मैसेज को भी देख पाएंगे।बुकिंग 2023 में होगी शुरू
अगर डिजाइन की बात करें, तो Liger X and Liger X+ समकालीन स्कूटरों की तरह ही है। मुख्य हेडलैम्प फ्रंट एप्रन में इंटीग्रेटेड है। Liger X और Liger X+ पांच कलर यानी ग्रे, पोलर व्हाइट, ब्लू, टाइटेनियम और रेड में उपलब्ध होंगे। ई-स्कूटर खरीदने के लिए आपको थोड़ा इंतजार करना होगा। कंपनी का कहना है कि दोनों स्कूटरों की बुकिंग 2023 के मध्य में शुरू होगी और डिलीवरी साल के अंत से पहले शुरू हो जाएगी।
ऑटोबैलेंसिंग टेक्नोलॉजी
कंपनी का कहना है कि इसका सेल्फ-बैलेंसिंग सिस्टम (ऑटोबैलेंसिंग टेक्नोलॉजी) राइडर को स्कूटर और कम स्पीड में सवारी करने की अनुमति देता है। जब आप कम स्पीड में इसे चलाते हैं, तो फिर अपने पैर को जमीन पर रखने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ती है यानी ट्रैफिक या रेड लाइट की स्थिति में यह उपयोगी हो सकता है। सिस्टम रिवर्स गियर के साथ मिलकर काम करता है। इससे यूजर संतुलन के लिए अपने पैरों का उपयोग किए बिना स्कूटर को रिवर्स कर सकते हैं। इसके अलावा, टॉप स्पीड को कंट्रोल करने के लिए इसे learner mode के साथ पेश किया जाएगा। हार्डवेयर और सॉफ्टवेयर सहित Liger X और Liger X+ की ऑटोबैलेंसिंग तकनीक के सभी पहलुओं को इन-हाउस विकसित किया गया है।
